After tricky weather made most of practice a waste, a tough draw in the top 32 and a super competitive battle that saw him lose to eventual event winner Tommy Lemaire, Geoff Donati is pleased overall with his and his team’s performance at FD Prospec round 1 in Atlanta.

In recent seasons, a Hyundai Genesis, an uncommon sight at drift events, has factored into the ranks. Dayton Boy JP Hunnicutt pilots that 2JZ-swapped piece of Korean engineering. His history with drifting and the story of how he came around to whipping the Genesis is an interesting one!

I sat down with him to talk through his drifting philosophy, how the Dayton Boys came to be and what his favorite memories from 9 seasons of drifting have been:

There’s no shortage of analogies to describe what went down at Drift Indy Street League Round 1 this weekend. We shook the etch-a-sketch. We poked the reset button with a mechanical pencil. We deleted our My Player. We prestiged.

Whatever. The point is, it’s a new era for DISL, and the new look is rad as hell. 

The time is nearly upon us, folks. We’re just a few days away from the dawn of the next iteration of Drift Indy Street League.

After an initial run of 10 volumes that spanned three seasons and saw over 100 total drivers vie for the podium, we’re wiping the scoreboard clean and starting fresh with a three-round series, all to be held in 2024.
